Handcart Trek Itinerary

Our Stake's Basic itinerary

Thursday: 
6:30 am  Meet at Stake Center & Leeds Chapel for Quick Chapel Session & carpooling and pioneer prayer
7:00 am  depart from  Stake Center & Leeds Chapel
9:00 am :  Pioneers arrive at the trail head - orientation/form trek families, name game, equipment check
11:00 am ;    pulling of handcarts 8  miles
1:00 pm – rest - vignette - while trekkers wait for lunch chuck wagon to arrive, bandits come on scene, rob some of their water and personal belongings and steal the chuck wagon - so no lunch here.
3:00 pm :  meet Native American who 'scalped the bandits and returns the chuck wagon - he performs drum song - lunch rest– vignette
5:00 pm:  rest Pony Express Arrives - don't tell kids about pony express) - vignette
7:00 pm  Arrival at camp – select your campsite - Staff Meeting   then families prepare dinner; eat
8:30 pm :  – family campfire time – story tellers
10:00 pm ;  family prayer, retire
 
 
Friday:
6:00 am :  Staff up; prayer
6:30 am .  Pioneers up; breakfast; scripture study
8:00 am :  Group & Family Meetings  - Story Teller tells a brief pioneer story
9:00 Start Pulling
9: 15:  Mormon Battalion & Women’s Pull
10:30;  Rest & Reflection Time
11:30:  Lunch/Potty & Rest Stop
1:30  Arrive at Base Camp – Relax  - Set up camp;  -start bread - if baking bread – get turkey in oven at about 4 pm  Start churning butter at 4:45 
3:00 : Workshops: Black Powder Shoot, Rope making Taffy Pull, Candle Making, Pioneer Skills/Games, archery, hatchet toss, Mormon Battalion Workshop
6:30  Story by Story teller (Eph Hanks story about the buffalo miracle, - since we'll also be eating buffalo), blessing on food, Feast
8:00 hoedown
10:00 pm  Family Prayer
 
 
Saturday
 
6:00 am staff up, prayer
6:30 am  pioneers up; breakfast;
7:30 am ; Group meetings;  family meetings
9:30 am ; Special Story about the forced march over the rocky ridge –  then rescue riders arrive and lead the trekkers on their own forced march over the rocky ridge to 'Zion' - A 2 mile march followed by  Testimony meeting
12:00 end of Trek: - snack for the road -  load equipment; head home

Prep Tip:

Start preparing for the trek NOW by taking daily walks.  Start by walking 15 minutes 3 times a week.  After a month, increase your walks to 30 minutes 3 times per week.  Be sure to use the "Monthly Events" Calendar as your guide.  For tips on preventing blisters, CLICK HERE
