We felt very strongly that family formations needed
to be done randomly (so the kids wouldn't question why
they got who they got), but we could see problems
trying to form families on the trailhead. The biggest
problem is, you don't have time to form families on
the trailhead. So, we ended up pulling all the
Stake YM/YW leaders and our registration couple
together after attending the temple, and we
prayerfully, yet randomly put the youth in families.
We had a book with all of their registration papers,
ordered by ward, age and gender. Each person in the
room was assigned family 1, family 2, family 3 and so
on. Then we'd each take turns pulling a name from the
book. It was amazing how equally strong each family
turned out in the end. On a couple occasions,
siblings landed in the same family but we were able to
fix that with no problem. We felt this was a good
method to form families randomly ahead of time, and we
know the Lord was there helping us get the job done.
You really won't have time to form families on the
trailhead. When everyone arrived at the trailhead,
family groups are announced for the first time. Up to
that point, family groups have been kept confidential.
