Handcart Trek Firesides

Need a Fireside Speaker?  Need Trek Music For Slideshow?

Cathy Neff, is the managing director of Honor White Stone music publishing company.  She is also the composer of a new CD that contains several tracks that would be very appropriate for leaders who are taking youth on treks this summer.   The songs from tracks 5, 7, 9, and 12 would be good for either pre-trek firesides or post trek slideshows.  You can get a preview of the songs here:

She has told me that she would be happy to do firesides and/or speak to YM/YW groups about the stories behind the songs in a fireside or class and perform or lead their choirs, etc.   In the State of Utah, she is be available in Utah County, Salt Lake County, Davis County, and Weber County. Other locations would have to be arranged.   The handcart pioneers are near and dear to her  heart.  You can contact her through her website www.honorwhitestone.com. or at:  cneff@honorwhitestone.com

Other FIRESIDE IDEAS INFO:

Please Note:  We held 2 Firesides.  One in January to kickoff our trek activities (our trek activities lasted 6 months - see our events calendar at:  http://handcart-trek.org/events.html ).  A 2nd Fireside was held in September and was our Reunion Fireside.

1st Fireside:  Our kickoff fireside was centered around introducing our trek theme, trek location and lots of trek preparation tips and was done using a PowerPoint  with several videos embedded within the presentation, to break things up a bit and keep things moving along smoothly. To keep the audience involved and excited, we included about 10 'trek trivia' questions which quizzed the youth on trek preparation topics discussed.  When a trivia question was answer correctly, the person answering the question earned a limited edition trek trivia T-Shirt.  This got everybody excited and was a lot of fun.  The questions were very simple and sometimes silly.  We also did a trek bucket equipment check demonstration showing how to pack a bucket and what happens to items that shouldn't be brought.  We had a lot of fun with this too.

A Couple Of Video Clips We Created Used In Our Kick Off Fireside Prior To Trek (in Jan) :

trekmessage2.wmv    trekmessage3.wmv  these are only 2 of the 7 video clips we used throughout the PowerPoint presentation.  The PowerPoint work out very well because it's very visual and kids are visually minded.  Use lots of pictures to show what they can look forward to.

2nd Fireside:  Several months after our Trek, we held Trek Reunion Fireside for everyone involved with the trek.  This gave the trek families a chance to refresh bonds and friendships created during the trek, and it was the perfect venue to distribute the 85 minute trek video we created for all trekkers.  Our Reunion Fireside consisted of 4 short talks by youth trekkers, a special youth choir performance of our trek theme song:  Bring Them In gobringtheminvocal.mp3  and a special performance of the song "Prayer Of The Walking Child".  Both songs are available from Sounds of Zion (they will gladly give you permission to use the music which is on the cd titled "Bring Them In: Celebrating The Spirit Of Trek"  "Prayer Of The Walking Child" was sung by one of our Stake's Young Men, backed up by 3 Young Women and one YW on violin and one on piano.  It was beautiful to the point of tears.  To top the evening off, we showed a powerful special segment of our trek video specially created for the occasion packed with inspiring music, powerful narratives and unforgettable footage.  Additional music selections used came from Sounds of Zion's Twenty-five Beloved Hymns of The Restoration Produced, arranged, and performed by Michael Dowdle.
