Strong, Durable, and Built for Trek Use

  • Wooden wheels crafted for an authentic handcart appearance
  • Strong 1 1/8 inch axles
  • Lengthened draw bars for safer pulling
  • 20-foot cotton rope attached to the front of each handcart

Trek Permits

Planning a Trek on Public Land?

Securing a permit to trek on National Forest land can feel intimidating at first, but for many non-commercial groups the process is more manageable than leaders expect.

The permit many treks need is a special use permit for non-commercial groups. For guidance on obtaining a USDA Special Use Permit for Non-Commercial Groups, visit the permit guidance page.

Handcart and Trailer Safety Rules

Safety Matters Before the Trek Begins

These handcart rules help protect participants, handcarts, ropes, wheels, trailers, and trek leaders.

Handcart Rules
  1. Handcarts should not be overloaded. They are designed to hold the gear for only 10–11 people, including clothing, sleeping bags, tarps, cooking equipment, and water.
  2. Each handcart has a 20-foot cotton rope that should remain attached to the cart during use.
  3. Do not allow ropes to drag on the ground. Dragging ropes causes rope damage.
  4. No one may ride on the handcart when it is loaded.
  5. When stopping the handcart, slowly lower the yoke until it rests on the ground. Do not drop the yoke.
  6. Do not sit or stand on the yoke when it is resting on the ground.
  7. Do not run with the handcarts. People can trip and fall under the wheels.
  8. Stay away from the wheels. Clothing, especially dresses, can get caught in the wheels.
  9. When stopping on a hill, place a rock behind the wheels so the handcart does not roll backward.
  10. When going down steep hills, attach the rope to the back of the handcart and have everyone help slow the cart. Always keep it under control.
  11. Do not pull a loaded handcart sideways on a steep incline where one wheel is consistently lower than the other.
  12. No duct tape is allowed on any part of the handcarts.
  13. Do not cut or carve on any part of the handcarts or ropes.
  14. Before returning handcarts, remove strings, bandanas, zip ties, candy, gum, taffy, or anything else placed on the handcarts by your group.
  15. No unapproved or unauthorized river crossings. Ask first.
